"I'll be there, I promise!" "I'll send the money later!" "Don't worry, I've got you!" Sound familiar? Unfortunately, these promises are more often spoken than kept. Promises have become nothing more than small talk or a way to avoid confrontation. Yet in Islam, promises are serious business. A promise is a responsibility that must be fulfilled, and breaking promises is actually a sign of hypocrisy.

There are three signs of a hypocrite: (1) when he speaks, he lies; (2) when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and (3) when he is entrusted with something, he betrays that trust.

Break Your Promises? Your Good Deeds Could Be Rejected! Rasulullah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever breaks a promise made to a Muslim will be cursed by Allah, by His angels, and by all of mankind. Neither his obligatory nor voluntary (sunnah) deeds will be accepted on the Day of Judgment."
In Islam, breaking promises isn't just any ordinary sin, it's at an extreme level. Imagine, you're not only facing Allah's wrath, but you're also cursed by the angels and all of humanity. Even worse, all the good deeds you've been accumulating for years could become worthless, all because you broke your promises.
Why Is This Sin So Serious? It Breaks Trust: All human relationships are built on trust. If everyone started breaking promises, the world would be total chaos—nobody could rely on anyone, and society would fall apart. It Hurts People: When you break a promise, you're not just disappointing someone, you're hurting their feelings and crushing their hopes. They trusted you, believed in you, and made real plans based on what you said. Then you let them down. What happens? They've wasted their time, energy, and sometimes money. Islam isn't just about prayer and fasting, it's about being a person of integrity and good character.
"But It's Just a Small Promise..." Every promise is a trust and a responsibility—it doesn't matter whether it's big or small, it must not be ignored. Don't fall into these wrong mindsets: "Oh, they'll understand.", "It's just between friends.", "No need to be so formal about it." Examples of "Small Promises" That Are Often Ignored: "I'll be there at 3" → shows up at 5 or doesn't show up at all. "God willing (Insha Allah), I'll come" → but they already decided not to come. "I promise I won't do it again" → does it again the next day.
"What If I Can't Actually Keep the Promise?" First, don't make promises carelessly! It's better to say "Sorry, I can't" than to make empty promises. Before you say "yes," think first, can you actually keep this promise? If you've already made a promise but realize you can't keep it, let them know right away! Don't suddenly disappear, communication is key.Apologize sincerely, explain your reasons (if you have valid ones), and offer a solution if possible.
