Honesty is a core value in Islam. However, in certain circumstances, Islam grants very limited concessions regarding statements that do not fully align with reality. This is not to justify lying, but rather to preserve greater benefit and prevent harm.
Permissible Lies

Truth leads to Paradise, and righteousness leads to Paradise. Likewise, a person who speaks the truth is recorded as truthful. Falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to Hell. Similarly, a person who tells lies is recorded as a liar.

Lying Is Only Permitted for GoodRasulullah (ﷺ) said: “A liar is not one who strives to reconcile people by saying something good (to avoid conflict) or conveying something beneficial.”Ibn Shihab said that he did not hear of any concession granted for what people say as lies, except in three cases: During war, to reconcile people, and relating what a husband says to his wife, or what a wife says to her husband (with the purpose of bringing goodness to the household).
For example:Your neighbors are arguing over something trivial, like noise or a minor household issue. You know the real cause, but directly stating the truth might escalate the situation.In such cases, it would be better to convey something calming or a "softer" version of the facts, so the conflict can settle down. This is permissible as lying for the purpose of reconciling people.
Another example: A husband comes home exhausted from work, and his wife cooks something that doesn't taste great. The husband says "It's good, honey" even though it's a bit bland.Or a wife asks "Do I look fat?" when her weight has actually gone up a little, and the husband says "No, you're still beautiful" to protect her feelings.This isn't lying to deceive or harm, but to protect feelings and maintain harmony in the marriage. The purpose is kindness and love, not manipulation or deception.
