Islam Strictly Forbids Muslims from Cursing

Cursing Is Like an Uncontrolled Boomerang

Words of the Prophetﷺ

Do not curse one another with Allah's curse, nor with His wrath, and do not curse each other with Hell!

Have you ever been angry enough to say things like "I hope you die!", "May you go to hell!", or "I hope karma gets you!"? In moments of intense emotion, urse words often slip out of our mouths without thinking. It feels relieving, as if we've "won" or gotten our verbal revenge.

Where Does Your Curse Go? The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When a person curses something, the curse rises to the heavens, but the gates of heaven are closed to it. Then it descends to the earth, but the gates of the earth are also closed." "The curse then wanders to the right and to the left. If it cannot find a proper target, it will go to the person who was cursed, but only if they truly deserve to be cursed. However, if they don't deserve it, then the curse returns to the one who cursed them."

A Curse Carries 'Negative Energy' That Must Go Somewhere Think of it as a fireball you've thrown, it cannot simply vanish. It must strike something or someone. Therefore, do not curse those who are undeserving of it. Allah is Most Just, He will not permit an innocent person (or one whose fault is small) to be afflicted by a severe curse.

Example (1): You're driving, and suddenly a motorcyclist cuts you off dangerously. You get angry and yell: "I hope you die! I hope you crash!" But the reality is, that motorcyclist is rushing his sick child to the hospital. He doesn't mean any harm, he's just in a desperate hurry. He doesn't deserve to be cursed. And when a curse falls on someone who's innocent, it returns to you, meaning you (might) be the one who ends up in an accident.

Example (2): There's a viral video: a woman refuses to give money to a beggar. You immediately comment: "I hope you become poor and end up begging too!" But the reality? That woman regularly gives to charity, she just didn't have any cash on her that day. She doesn't deserve to be cursed with poverty. And a misdirected curse? It comes back to you, and you (might) be the one struggling financially.

Online Curses Can Become Lasting Sins What you write on the internet doesn’t just vanish. It can be screenshotted at any moment, spread without control, and read by thousands or even millions of people. And here’s the worst part, the sin can keep multiplying when others read it, get influenced, and start doing the same. So before you type harsh words or wish harm on someone, remember that your digital footprint never really disappears.

Besides that, cursing others will never solve the problem. It only makes you more toxic, harms your own mental well-being, and just brings more negativity into your life. A better solution: Pray to Allah to improve the difficult situation you’re facing. Then, take real steps to look for solutions. And finally, learn to accept that some things are simply beyond your control. Cursing won’t change anything, but prayer, effort, and acceptance? Those are what bring peace to your heart.
