Even Small Creatures Deserve Care

Words of the Prophetﷺ

Fear Allah regarding these animals that cannot speak. Treat them well when you ride them, and slaughter them in the best way.

Have you ever felt that your pet is just 'yours' to treat however you want? Many of us underestimate our responsibility toward the small creatures around us, whether it's a pet cat, a bird in a cage, or even ants on the street. Every creature, no matter how small, has rights that must not be ignored, and Allah will hold us accountable for how we treat them.

Giving Rest to Animals That Have Helped Us Narrated by Anas bin Malik: He said, “When we stopped at a resting place, we would not begin our prayers to Allah until we had first unloaded the burdens from the backs of our riding animals.”

Taking Good Care of Pets The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A woman entered Hell because of a cat that she imprisoned until it died. She entered Hell because of it,as she neither fed it nor gave it water when she confined it, nor did she set it free to eat the insects of the earth.”

Even Serving Animals Has Reward Once, a man was walking and became very thirsty. He found a well, climbed down into it, and drank. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and licking the mud out of extreme thirst. The man said, 'This dog is suffering from the same thirst I just had.' So he went back down into the well, filled his shoe with water, held it in his mouth, climbed back up, and gave the dog a drink.Allah appreciated this deed and forgave his sins." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Do we get rewarded for serving animals?" He replied, "Yes, there is reward in serving every living being."

Do Not Disturb Animals Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud: We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey. He went to relieve himself. We saw a bird with two young ones, and we took them. The bird came and spread its wings. The Prophet ﷺ came and said, "Who has grieved this one concerning her young? Return her young to her."He also saw an ant village that we had burnt. He asked, "Who has burnt this?" We said, "We." He said, "It is not right to punish with fire except the Lord of Fire."

Sometimes we don't realize we abuse animals in "small" ways, like kicking a cat that walks by, throwing rocks at stray dogs, messing with bird nests for fun, or intentionally crushing ants. "It's just an animal, right?" But the truth is, even disturbing a bird or burning ants was sternly condemned by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah cares for all His creation, no matter how tiny. True compassion isn't only for other people, it's for every creature that can feel suffering. Small acts of kindness carry great meaning: providing food and water, or simply not bothering them.
