Small But Consistent, More Beloved to Allah

Small But Consistent

Words of the Prophetﷺ

The deeds most beloved to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small.

Our worship enthusiasm is often like a roller coaster, super diligent at the start of Ramadan, then slacking off after Eid. We read the Quran daily when motivated, but once life gets busy, we skip days. Yet what Allah loves is not abundant deeds done briefly, but small deeds done consistently.

Transformation Begins with Small Steps

Breaking bad habits or starting good ones isn't easy. One approach that can help is the concept of micro-habits, which means doing small things consistently until the impact accumulates over time.Because they're easy to repeat, this approach can gradually lead us to big, long-term changes.

We often get ambitious at the start of the year or month: "Starting tomorrow I'm going to work out every day!", "I'm going to read 50 books this year!" or "I'm going to fast every Monday and Thursday!" But a week later? We're back to our old habits. Why? Because the goals are too big, overwhelming, and unsustainable. Our brains get overwhelmed by drastic changes, so we give up. Micro-habits are the solution, make it a small step instead, so failing becomes nearly impossible.

Instead of forcing yourself to work out every day, just start with 1-3 times a week. Instead of reading 50 books a year, just start with "read 1 page every night before bed." Instead of fasting every Monday and Thursday, start with just Mondays consistently for a month. Sounds too easy? That's exactly the point. Because it's easy, we're more likely to stay consistent. Once it becomes a habit, then we can gradually increase the intensity.

When we successfully build one small good habit, it can boost our confidence to start other good habits too. This small win makes us think, "Hey, I can actually do this!" and that's what gives us the confidence to make even bigger positive changes in our life.

Every time we achieve a small goal, we feel happy and proud. And this feeling makes us want to chase other goals too. So what starts as "we can wake up early" becomes "we can work out regularly," then "we can memorize 1 juz," all the way to "we can start a business." Confidence compounds, the more small wins we rack up, the more confident we become in tackling bigger challenges.
